Malaysian Government must respond to British Parliament Early Day Motion and international community calling for the release of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and justice for Opposition MPs.

Parti KEADILAN welcome and thank the British MPs for filing an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling the release of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. It is a sign of international solidarity and continuous call for justice for DSAI and Opposition MPs who are facing various draconian charges by the authority.

Malaysian Government must realise by now, no country is an Island and Malaysia’s good name is tarnished because of injustice against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Opposition Members of Parliament. Parti KEADILAN urge the Malaysian Government to respond to the increasing calls by international communtity for the release of Datuk Seri Anwar and drop charges against all Opposition Members of Parliament, civil societies, students and journalists.

An Early Day Motion titled “FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE IMPRISONMENT OF MALAYSIAN OPPOSITION LEADER ANWAR IBRAHIM” was filed on 9 February 2016, exactly 1 day before the anniversary of imprisonment of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Read here:

The EDM was filed by a very senior British MP Ann Clwyd who is currently the President of Inter-Parliament Unions (IPU) Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians. Malaysian parliament is a member of IPU. Ann Clwyd was elected to be British MP since 1984. She is the current chairperson of All Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group in British Parliament.

The tabling of EDM is significant because it attracts the attention of British parliament. It attracts multi party signatories means it has wide support among all parties on this issue. The signatories included MPs from Labour Party, Scottish National Party & Social Democratic and Labour Party.

EDM are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. EDMs are used for reasons such as drawing attention to specific events or campaign and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause, although few EDMs are actually debated.

In this case, British MPs across parties has supported this EDM. The British MPs are concern about “political motivated charges (that) has undermined Malaysian democracy and confidence in the Malaysian Justice system”.

British MPs also “calls on the relevant Malaysian authorities to release Anwar Ibrahim, and in the interim, to ensure he is able to access appropriate medical care, including the medical specialists of his choice, even if that necessitates travel abroad.” This is a sign that international community is very well aware of the deteriorating health conditions of DSAI and call upon the Government of Malaysia to release him on humanitarian grounds.

It is noteworthy that British MPs also raised concern for almost 20 Opposition MPs who are currently subjected to legal proceedings under Sedition Acts and other legislation, for exercising their legitimate political and civil rights.

Parti KEADILAN urge the Government to seriously look into the demand by the British MPs who represents cross parties support. The Malaysian Government will not escape international scrutiny if Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Opposition MPs continue to be oppressed.
